Dealing with Infertility

Receiving an infertility diagnosis, or realizing that getting (and staying) pregnant might not be easy for you, can be devastating. You’ve suddenly found yourself on a road filled with stops and starts, punctuated by loss and steeped in uncertainty.

My clinical training means that you don’t have to explain to one more person what you’re going through. I get it. In our work together we can focus on managing stress, processing messy feelings and learning how to be your own best advocate. I’m here to sort through options, support you in making hard decisions, and help find what might feel like an impossible balance.

Some common issues that may come up:

  • Miscarriage and pregnancy loss
  • Termination for Medical Reasons
  • Exploring treatment options, including IUI and IVF
  • Failed cycles and deciding whether to try again
  • Using donor eggs, sperm, or embryos, or a gestational carrier
  • Secondary infertility and feelings of guilt
  • Strain on your relationship, including when you and your partner want different things
  • Pregnancy announcements, baby showers, and family questions
  • Deciding when to stop treatment, and what comes next
  • Pregnancy after infertility

What we actually work on

A lot of infertility is waiting: for test results, for your next cycle, for the two-week wait to end. We’ll work on getting through those stretches without your whole life going on hold. We can also get practical, like preparing questions for your doctor or talking through a decision before you make it. We can figure out what to say (and not say) to friends and family, too.

If you have a partner, you may be handling this very differently. One of you wants to talk about it constantly and the other doesn’t want to talk about it at all. That’s really common, and partners are welcome to join sessions.

Specialized training

I’m certified in Infertility and Mental Health through the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). I know the vocabulary, the protocols, and the medical side of treatment, so you won’t have to spend our time explaining any of it.

You don’t have to wait for a crisis

Some people reach out at diagnosis. Others come in after their third failed transfer, or when they’re trying to decide whether to keep going. Wherever you are, it’s a good time to start.
